The population of Stavanger is increasing dramatically during the 19th century due mainly to young people from the Ryfylke and Jæren areas seeking to make their fortunes in the rapidly expanding town.
Stavanger is a town where Iinfluences crowd in from both the surrounding Ryfylke and Jæren areas, as well as from abroad – from seamen who sail the seven seas and missionaries with their stories from far-away countries.
The connection with America grows stronger as the century progresses. More than 10,000 of Stavanger’s inhabitants emigrate to become Americans.
