Stavanger's first canning factory
Stavanger's first canning factory
The sign belonged to Stavanger's first canning factory, which was located at Øvre Strandgate 38. The factory started operations in 1873. In the beginning, making provisions for sailing ships was most important, but in the autumn of 1879, Stavanger Preserving Co. launched a new product: smoked Norwegian sardines. Sardines became the most important product in the Norwegian canning industry. Around 1920, there were 200 sardine factories in Norway, of which 72 were located in Stavanger. The sardine industry dominated Stavanger's business life for around 100 years.
