Our birds

01. Jan 1933 - 31. Aug 2016

Do you know what Norway’s smallest bird is? What about the biggest? What is Norway’s national bird? In this exhibition you will find both Norwegian and foreign birds. Maybe you will find the world’s most common bird?

Rogaland has a rich and varied bird fauna all year around, even though it is hardly affected by human impact. Few, if any, places in Norway are comparable to this county in terms of the number of species found here throughout the year. Compared to other counties Rogaland is thoroughly researched in the context of ornithology. This is largely due to the fact that Stavanger Museum has had ornithology as an area of specialist studies since 1918. The amateur ornithologists of the county have also made impressive contributions over many decades.

The exhibitions also show birds from other bio-geographical regions. Many of these birds are members of endangered populations or are directly threatened with extinction.
