900 animals in 1 year

The goal is to find 900 different animal species in Stavanger during the city’s 900th anniversary year, 2025.

We are in the midst of a nature crisis. Species are disappearing at an alarming rate, while the mapping of species is progressing too slowly. It’s more important than ever to protect the nature around us — but it’s hard to protect what we don’t even know exists.

In 2025, when Stavanger celebrates its 900th anniversary, the Natural History Department at Museum Stavanger has launched the project "900 Species in 1 Year" to map the animal species living in Stavanger Municipality.

Everyone can take part!
The goal is to log observations of at least 900 different animal species in Stavanger during 2025 — with the help of local residents, and the Norwegian Zoological Society (Rogaland branch), Project Baseline Stavanger, and Stavanger Diving Club.

Keep track of the species found so far. Below you’ll find an updated list of all the species observed throughout the year.

Have you spotted an animal species in Stavanger Municipality? Send us an email with:

• A photo of the species

• Date of observation

• Location (nearest street address or place name)

• Contact information of the observer

• (Optional) A short description that may help with species identification

Please make sure the photo is clear and of good quality, so that we can identify the species. Silhouettes against bright backgrounds — whether birds or insects — are often hard to determine.

By sending us photos, you give your consent for them to be used on the museum’s website and social media.
