Byens første ambulanse
Den kombinerende Indretning er byens sykehus, fattighus, tvangsarbeidsanstalt og sinnssykeasyl. «Den grønne båren» er byens første ambulansetjeneste. To «staltere», det vil si innsatte straffanger fra Den kombinerende Indretning, henter de syke eller døde og bærer dem til institusjonen. Båren er praktisk til å transportere gjennom den trange trehusbebyggelsen. Samtidig er denne transportmåten et levende bilde på de uverdige forholdene som preger driften av institusjonen.

Stavanger’s first ambulance
The ‘Kombinerede Indretning’ served as the town’s hospital, poorhouse, forced workhouse and mental asylum. ‘The green stretcher’ represents the town's first ambulance service. Two convicts from the prison act as stretcher bearers who fetch the sick and dead and carry them to the institution. The stretcher is a practical means of transporting bodies through the narrow alleys between Stavanger's timber buildings. At the same time, this mode of transport is living testament to the shameful conditions that characterise the way in which the institution is being run.
